The Alexander McQueen dress worn by Gaga on 2010 VMAs arrival was a beautiful piece of art and had a interesting meaning: The dress had an image of an angel holding a sheet of parchment. The image being used is Annunciation by Stephan Lochner, which describes the biblical announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

In that same night, she sang a verse of the song and revealed the title of her next album, Born This Way. She said in a interview “I wrote the song in ten fucking minutes and it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception.” She also said “Right after he [Alexander McQueen] died, I wrote Born This Way. I think he’s up in heaven with fashion strings in his hands, marionetting away, planning this whole thing”.

Back in the dress, Mary is absent, the direct object of the annunciation is missing, placing Gaga in the role of the receptacle for the body of Christ (Born This Way) and placing McQueen as Gabriel, the Angel, who brought the message to her.

There’s a lot of other things that shows how minimalist this is but with only this we can see that her fashion was not just chosen, it was a beautiful and  well thought out way to say that she was bringing to us the light, our saviour, Born This Way.
